The Crown

Who or What is the Crown?

Crown Corporation, City of London.

London, the vibrant capital of the United Kingdom, is known for its rich history, iconic landmarks, and bustling city life. However, hidden within this bustling metropolis lies a unique entity known as the Crown. The Crown is a term used to refer to the City of London, a distinct area within the city that operates under its own set of laws, has its own police force, and even its own mayor.

The City of London, often referred to as the Square Mile, is the historic core of the capital and is located within the boundaries of the ancient Roman city walls. Despite being just a small area geographically, it holds immense significance as a global financial center and a hub for business and commerce.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the City of London is its autonomy. It is not governed by the same laws and regulations as the rest of the city. Instead, it has its own unique legal system, known as the “City’s Customs and Liberties.” These laws have evolved over centuries and are upheld by the City of London Corporation, a local authority that acts as the governing body of the Square Mile.

In addition to its distinct legal system, the City of London also has its own police force, the City of London Police. This force is responsible for maintaining law and order within the boundaries of the Square Mile and has jurisdiction over certain financial crimes and fraud cases. The City of London Police works closely with other law enforcement agencies in the wider London area to ensure the safety and security of its residents and visitors.

Furthermore, the City of London has its own elected official, known as the Lord Mayor. The Lord Mayor of London is a prestigious position that is separate from the Mayor of London, who governs the Greater London area. The Lord Mayor represents the interests of the City of London and acts as an ambassador for its financial and commercial sectors.
